Another week - another open mic. This time with an opening set from a band taking cues from bands like Radiohead. Interesting set, with a tight sound and a vocalist I liked
- although we were all trying to figure out the lyrics he was singing.
Which prompted one of the best jokes I have heard in ages. The singer realised (cos Nick told him) that we were having difficulty hearing the words - so he made a comment about not pronouncing the "D"s - then said he he spoke in dropped D tuning......you had to be there I guess.....LOL
So anyway!
James returned with a strong set - got everyone singing Stand by me - which I didn't expect from the guy more likely to play Alice in Chains songs! LOL
Rory did a new version of his Cardboard song - with new punchlines - and another song he'd written which was cool.
Nick did "All the time" which is a lovely song (hear it on his page).
Terry made a dog for the raffle - and someone else got it.
Other highlights were Del/Dirty Hippy singing Sympathy for the devil - and a mass formation of 8 singers giving us a loose "don't worry about us we're pissed" rendition of the JCB song.
Terry finally did some more poetry after a long gap - it was great to hear the classics like "Bread" again.
The guy that played before who thought he sounded like a woman (he doesn't) played again, this time with a mate - I like his voice and was pleased to see him back.
Steve gave us Bowie and Elton - giving a nod to the film Almost Famous - one of the greatest films ever made in my humble opinion.
Jay and I did a couple of duets - with varying success - I broke a personal rule about "going for it" before really "knowing" the material - and the technical difficulties (of lack of knowhow from me) added to a chaotic moment between songs.
Jay is a great performer and the first one we did together went off alright -we lost out on his solo bits though which was a shame. One song he did do at the end though was the excellent song he wrote with some difficult (and interesting chord changes - not sure what it's called but it was excellent.
So there you go...my perspective of a night of highs and lows.
