As soon as you can say "ahoooooooo Werewolves of London", another
week arrives....A great night, this time with the audience peppered with a myriad of
history students (that was a bit of a pleasant shock to me!).
The main act - the headliners - were a bluesy, skifflish, laid back
trio who had obviously been playing together for decades - nice to
see that kind of setup still playing after all those years - mind
you one of them joked about the guitars being dusted off from
storage so....maybe they are neglecting man's best friend! (his
guitar)
I really liked their version of Dire Straits "Romeo and Juliet" -
beautifully put across...
Jon started the open mic bits with two of his own again and did
himself proud, with Terry joining in on drums of course from the
audience.
Becky followed with a James Blunt song "Goodbye my love"
and "Layla". She seems to be getting more and more confident as the
weeks go by....
Busy Burning Bridges were next, they were a bass player and a
singer/guitarist - apparently half a band. They did the Foo
Fighters "Learn to Fly" and had some technical difficulty which the
singer was blaming on Nick - but Nick was having none of it LOL -
and as no-one else had the same problem....
Rory treated us to another Werewolves of London singalong - and did
an uncharacterictic "Keep me in your heart tonight" - another Warren
Zevon song - as i'm a huge fan of Warren Zevon, I am chuffed that
i'm seeing someone tackling his stuff - you just don't see people
doing it. - and like i've said before Rory is a legend....
Skies were next - interesting band - definitely a band worth
checking out, liked the songs and delivery - seemed to have an
atitude that fitted the ease of the club too which is important.
Seemed to be obsessed with my mate's roll ups though LOL - strong
tight sound.
Simon and Jay appeared next (presumably the raffle has happened by
now, I can't remember where that went in the line-up, but Terry
provided more artistic prizes - as well as the Easter eggs, CDs,
videos etc) - and they did a lovely version of Bill Withers "Ain't
no Sunshine" - senstitively sung by Simon, nicely played by Jay.
Hope Simon returns....(I know Jay will LOL)
Jay appeared later again, this time with his mum at first. That was
wonderful, she had been nagged to play for ages, and told me it
wasn't exactly something she was looking forward to! LOL - when
they came on Jay's mum looked like she wanted to throttle him! LOL -
they did "Summertime", with Jay grinning, leaning up against the
wall while he played, watching his mum doing a sterling job of an
old classic.
Then Jay did Thin Lizzy's "Dancing in the moonlight", his song "You"
and the classic "Wish you were here" (Floyd) with me running up to
sing a harmony for the last part - which was a great moment for me.
Love that song. He finished with his arrangement of Weller's "Wild
Wood", with his mum and Simon joining him and Nick doing some odd
dancing behind him and singing inappropriately LOL - classic - this
is what we missed with the mixing desk! - once Nick's had a
few...Jay gets the brunt of the larking about LOL.
I changed my mind yet again about what I was playing - I do it every
week! - and instead of doing "For what it's worth" (Buffalo
Springfield) I did two of mine - one of which was "Lorelei", the
other of which I will probably post on her when i've done the album
in May. ("For all to see" is it's title).
Roll on Thursday...(and I really should try other places too -
there's about 4 around that are on my list!)
