I COULDN'T KEEP AWAY! The name I had decided on (on Thursday) for this blog is ironic
seeing as a bad cold kept me off long trips to the computer for a
while! - what i'm actually referring to is not keeping away from the
Thursday night club at the Milton Arms!
- it's become an important part of my week/life.
- and I really was not set to go.
My cold was getting worse, I Couldn't imagine getting through a
song, Louis had chicken pox and the two ladies in the house had
similar colds.
I was determined to do some university work at the library anyway -
due to an interrogation/assessed seminar the next day - so that was
my plan for the evening.
Before I left for the library, I checked myspace and had a message
from Brad saying that John, the other half of "Before and After" was
gonna be there. I thought it was awful that I was missing the
opportunity to see him after over 10 years, but carried on with my
plan - hoping to see him another week....
So i'm standing at the bus stop - for AGES! - for about 15 minutes
to be more specific - and all the time i'm thinking "I want to be at
the club etc etc"
- so I thought "sod it! - i'm off to the club" - and went.
- and it was a great night of course!
Chris Pitt was the main guy and he did a great set full of familiar,
well presented covers - a gentle intro to the evening - he did an
encore too - which was "You got to hide your love away" - which I
hadn't heard done for a while - a lovely song.
From now on - the order may be wrong - so apologies...
Rory did "Werewolves of London" again, which had everyone singing -
and did the one with the huge set of lyrics - this time I noticed
him mentioning a "stamp collector from Baghdad"! LOL.
Leigh did two great tracks - one was a song she wrote herself about
what she wanted to do later in life - which she said touched her mum
loads. That was a lovely song - but I was EXTREMELY impressed with
her version of Blondie's "Call Me" - not just impressed with the
fact that it was a gentle acoustic version of a classic with a
shuffle rhythm - but also how much it suited her style - perfectly
picked!
Jon did a great set of his own songs again.
Jason - who I hadn't seen before - did a couple of songs - one of
which was a nice version of "Fake Plastic Trees".
I - despite my idea of appearing as a spectator - played.
I actually, ironically, was happier with that performance than some
of the others i've done there - partly because I tried something new
for me - Sam Cooke's "What a wonderful World" - I love that song and
as I suspected, when I was playing it, it felt great! - really
really enjoyed singing it.
Besides the songs, there was a new issue in the club this week -
Nick had to contend with new technology - that being a new mixing
desk - the technological problems it produced bringing the night to
a stand still on occasion and preventing Nick from having a laugh
with the performers (singing harmonies etc) - so I know that Nick
didn't like it - and I can see why - but it was put to a vote at
the end of the night and most people wanted to give the mixing desk
another go....so the plot thinkens....
Looks like i'll be going next week considering how out of it I felt
last time! LOL
I failed to mention how much I enjoyed Jamie bringing me up to
sing "Long Train Running" with him (with Chris playing lead).
- actually I forgot to mention Jamie's whole set!!!
Blimey! - sorry mate!!!
Jamie was brilliant!
