What a great night last night was!!!!!The atmosphere was great, the whole evening was unpredictable.
(it starts at 7pm and finishes at 11pm)
I only played two songs, I chose the venue as a warmup to get back into playing live after a year gap - and that went well, really enjoyed it and got a great response etc - but it was what happened after that made the night.
The compere/organiser etc Nick Courtney likes to promote a feeling of organised chaos I think - and it works - so much of the evening you're laughing at either his messing about with the acts or some of the other unpredictable things that he has no control over (like the spontaneous drumming that this old folk club veteran Terry starts up at random moments during the evening!)
So some of the highlights of the fantastic night out I had last night at the open mic club....
1) A couple decided to do Itchycoo Park - everyone was singing along to that - Nick got his tambourine out etc...
2) Another guy, that impressed me every time he did his own stuff or helped out with someone else, did a great version of Space Oddity.
3) There was a surreal moment when a young lady calling herself Helen of Doom and her boyfriend, a metal guitarist did two long prog rock songs with backing tapes - that was a surprise!! LOL - they actually had some groupies with them sitting by them while they played! LOL
4) After the Itchycoo Park moment, the woman singer went back into the audience and the guy left who was backing her, who called himself "Dirty Hippy", played some tracks - he was brilliant! - he did a great "Break on through to the other side" - with lots of meaty Morrisonesque vocal moments. Then Nick asked him to do JCB by Nizlopi (I love that song), and so Dirty Hippie asked anyone in the audience if they knew the words, Steve (Space Oddity) came up and sang the verses - while EVERYONE sang the chorus and obviously the end bit (which went on forever LOL). That was great, it's such a lovely song and very impromptu too.
I was well impressed with him though, really really good.
5) Best thing about the whole night, and it really was magic, was when Nick said, let's have a jam then! - and Jamie (a good performer who i'd seen before who seems to have a Paul Weller fixation), Steve (the guy who did Space Oddity), Terry (random drummer), another guy whose name escapes me who had played earlier too and Nick on tambourine and vocals, Dirty Hippie on guitar and vocals again to complete this line up - Terry asked me to go up too but they seemed like they were more familiar to each other and I was new to the club so I just sang as loud as I could from the audience (I was right next to them anyway in the audience)
Steve went to his car and got his bass - and plugged that in - so now you have a band sound - and they all did an impromptu version of "Long Train Running" by the Doobie Brothers. - it was excellent - much tighter than you'd expect it to be and it was bloody loud LOL - I was singing away...well everyone was....great moment...
Looking forward to next week!
So there you go - a lovely night out at Nick's Open Mic Club at the Milton Barn, behind the Milton Arms.
