Posted by John In an ideal world with-out maintainance or decay, I would suggest painted or stained wood trims. Our drawings are actually detailed this way, but you can also use several manufactured trims boards that are available. There are vinyl composite boards and Hardi-trim is also very popular too. This is a cement based board, but it is relatively easy to work with and comes prefinished as well as just primed. Our plan indicate exposed wood rafter tails and wood soffits. It is very common though to substitute metal soffit and fascia if desired. Even if you do decide to go the metal soffit/fascia route, you should still add the wood brackets, which are integral with the craftsman style and overall appearance of the cottages. For exterior wood finishing, stain is a better alternative to paint, as the prep time is a lot quicker. Normally, stained surfaces don't peel and flake off, they just fade. If you have any other questions, just let us know, John
