Porch width

We're wondering about the 6' porch depth on the EG 1681 and other plans. Is 6' wide enough to handle any traffic - would it be possible to extend that to 8' or so?

Hi Bob: The porch is drawn at 6' wide as you say, and that is to the outside face of the columns. The roof overhang over this is actually 8' wide. We have not made the deck wider than this as that the wider we to out with it, the more rise we get on the roof over it, and then the dormer windows get smaller. If you are interested in a wider deck you might want to consider extending the deck floor out further, but keep the roof and columns where they are. The other option would be to pull the roof and columns out but we would need to redesign the dormer to get the windows to fit. Hope this makes sense. John

Bob, I built an E-1681 in 2003 and have found that the porch is fine for simple deck seating such as an Adirondack chair. There is still plenty of room to walk around the chair when the back is against the house. We tried a narrow table against the railing but found that the space just isn't large enough to accomodate an eating table with chairs. Will

Will, Thanks. Are there any other changes you'd make now that you have had a chance to experience the 1681 design?

Bob, We built the plan with some revisions including lengthening the house through the living room and entry by 2' and widening it by 2' through the bedroom 2 closet and living room and 1' each through the laundry and master bath and the dining room and screened porch. This allowed a full-depth counter and folding counter in the master bath and laundry and a walk-in closet in bedroom 2. We also enclosed the screen porch and turned it into an ensuite office. Our total footage is 2040. Overall the plan works very well and we love the house. The only two changes that I would make now would be to find a way to enlarge the master closet if this is to be your primary residence and to make the hallway connecting bed 2 and 3 wider to form a vestibule area with a door to the living room in order to isolate that end of the house a little more.
