Hello Robin:
There currently is a support column located in the intersection of the vertical wall behind the cabinets and the horizontal back wall of the closet.
So to answer your question, yes you can remove the vertical wall and revise the cabinet layout to reflect an island configuration.
If you are in need of more space and will be adjusting the closet as well, that will be a little trickier to do, but not impossible as we can try and adjust the roof framing to take over that point load which would be removed.
