I agree, that the windows sure help bring light down inside, as the veranda roofs can tend to block some light. The stair would not be affected if the loft were made smaller, and the interior would be more open. The other option of course is skylights, which can work fine or be prone to leaking. It seems to me that the problem with skylights is more often a case of faulty or inferior installation. Dormers certainly look better than skylights too. I hope this helps, John
