I personally have not heard of this happening but that does not mean it doesn't. What I suggest if you want to stay with the metal roofing and avoid this issues would be to furr out the stove pipe with a wood chase as show on our plans to make it a more secure structure. This will also allow you to build a small roof on site in the valley formed by the chimney chase and the main roof itself. This site framing will help deflect any sliding ice & snow away from the chimney.
