I forgot to mention and also clarify that in Europe CD singles are pressed and used exactly as I said, either to be a "loss-leader" promotional item or they break even if they sell really well.
The issue/problem lies in the North American market - both USA and Canada!
Also, if a label feels distribution costs will drastically increase the cost of making the single (because the pressing also costs money), if it's a lesser-known artist (i.e. under 1 million CD sales per single or album), why not press the CD single and sell them at the artist's tourstops? OR why not have a main warehouse, store the CDs there and have anyone order it at ANY retail chain (i.e. Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) and have it shipped to that store? Of course it means the retailer may have to sell it at a higher price to cover shipping but having to tell someone "ummm ya, this isn't out on CD, you have to get it on iTunes" just doesn't cut it.
So far I don't see Robbins having this problem as their releases are always sold in stores but I don't see ULTRA releasing physical CD singles - only digital ones.
It's an even bigger issue in Canada where almost everything is either "imported" for a CD single or the label only has it on iTunes or other paid-websites. CD singles have not existed in Canada since right after "Music" (Darude) was released in 2003.
