I guess I wonder if the major characters or fictional or just renamed. I have the feeling that the characters and events of this novel are much closer to 'reality' than those of say Dr. Glas or Herzog. Maybe that still doesn't make it a nonfiction novel.
I sort of grudgingly accept the term nonfiction novel. I don't like it. It's awkward. And of course, novels are traditionally fictional. But after reading In Cold Blood, I guess I sort of felt that if it walks like a novel and quacks like a novel.... I certainly wouldn't call In Cold Blood journalism.
What would you call the books of Henry Miller? One sometimes sees them on lists of novels. Henry himself said that they weren't, and I don't think they are.
