I also though of:
The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster
Take It or Leave It by Raymond Federman
Mulligan Stew by Gilbert Sorrentino
Going Native by Stephen Wright
Probably not postmodernist but worth considering is Steps by Jerzy Kosinski. (Certainly strange, maybe not fun.)
There is a lot of science fiction that is essentially postmodernist (which now that I think of it would include Dhalgren). The grandmaster of postmodernist sci-fi is J. G. Ballard. More recent practitioners would include China Miéville (Perdido Street Station, The City & the City) and Jeff VanderMeer (The Southern Reach Trilogy).
PS - If you haven't tried it, you might check out Pynchon's first novel, V. Much of it is very entertaining, and it is not nearly as mannered as some of his later novels. (Plenty strange, though.)
PPS - If The Sot Weed Factor becomes available on kindle, I think there would be no problem to reading it on kindle. Barth goes in for typographical tricks in some of his work, especially short stories, but I don't recall any such shenanigans in TSWF.
: I hope you'll enjoy it, and I hope to be
: able to get into it and finish it someday.
: I read Little, Big but didn't enjoy it much.
: Lanark is on my list, but I'm waiting till I
: can get a real book.
: The Sot Weed Factor is on my list too. Any
: problem with reading that on kindle? Well,
: the obvious problem that it seems to be
: unavailable on kindle.
: Same problem with A Glastonbury Romance
: which I've thought of reading.
: I learned of this Dhalgren yesterday when
: browsing lists. I might try that.
: I have sometimes thought of reading The
: Gormenghast trilogy. Perhaps this is the
: moment for it.
: I read House of Leaves about ten years ago,
: but I wasn't very impressed.
: I don't think it's right to say I dislike
: postmodern literature. I dislike Gravity's
: Rainbow, and I've mentioned that James Wood
: dislikes postmodern literature. Looking over
: a list of postmodern novels on wikipedia, I
: find books I like a lot, books I have little
: feeling at all about, and books I dislike.
: The same with any period of time. So tell me
: the postmodern novels you had in mind.
