How long since you guys read Bleak House? Didn't the book club read it around 04 ?
I'm a little over halfway through now. I'm enjoying it but not as well as I remember. There is something about Dickens. For some reason, he was just about the last really big author that I got around to rereading. Great Expectations is the only one I've read three times. Even though I've called Bleak House my favorite, it's been at least fifteen years since I read it. Perhaps, by the end, I'll feel that I've enjoyed it as much as before. We'll see.
I am wondering about something this time that I don't think I wondered before. At least I don't remember wondering it. What did you guys think of the benefactor, the guardian, Mr Jarndyce? This time, I feel rather suspicious of him. He says himself at one moment that lawyers have told Rick there is a conflict of interest. I wonder if he is playing a game of 'keep your friends close, your enemies closer'. Taking care of the wards would be a small price to pay for retaining control of the fortune. I even wondered if his letting the very ill Jo come into the house against the protest of Skimpole was a calculated attempt to rid himself of one or more of the wards. For some reason I imagine the illness to be smallpox. If Jarndyce had already survived it, he could feel safe from it, right? What do you think of my suspicions?
