As for my recent reading, it includes the following:
"The Painted Veil", by Somerset Maugham. a short novel, the story of a frivolous woman who suffers a shock in deep China in the 1920's. Recommendable.
"The Baron in the Trees", by Italo Calvino. A wonderful fantasy about a boy who, after refusing to eat a dish of snails, climbs to a tree and never comes back to the ground. A philosophical fable located in Northern Italy in the XVIII century, full of ideas and romance.
"The Prisonner", by Marcel Proust. The fifth part of "In Search of Lost Time", where Marcel and Albertine are back in Paris and living together, to the satisfaction and annoyance of Marcel, who is in the grip of jealousy about the suspected lesbian infidelities of the girl. A marvelous piece of literature.
"The Elegance of the Hedgehog", by Muriel Barbery. A very moving tale of loneliness and culture, art, and literature as means to the good life.
