Just finished it. What an amazing book! At times I wasn't sold on it, but eventually I couldn't put it down, and I wound up flagging more passages for discussion than perhaps any book we've read. The ending is both ominous and bizarre.

: I love the hypochondraic cousin!: "One could say
: that the unity known as the body had been lost for
: Yasar, to be occupied by a perplexing collusion made
: up of independently working organs that resembled a
: governmental cabinet whose seats were occupied by
: ministers of different parties".

: Real quick for now: alcohol was always there, wine
: especially (someone told me that the koran says not to
: drink wine so Turks have invented raki)
:
: Sleeveless dress were already in fashion in the the
: early 1900s before the Republic. Earlier books mention
: ladies at Istanbul's high society parties wearing low
: cut and sleeveless dresses. Ataturk's wife has many
: pictures with modern dresses.
:
: I will have to see the bikini reference myself and
: maybe check out the Turkish version as well.

: I balked at the reference to "bikini line"
: as
: well. I think that has to be an anachronism introduced
: by the translator. Perhaps in the original there was a
: reference to an article of traditional attire that
: wouldn't have meant anything to us (like something
: that belly dancers wear).
:
: Lale has told us about raki, so I wasn't surprised
: about that.

: I'm 1/4 through it, and also enjoying it. It's deep
: and
: philosophical, with a great sense of humor. But hey!
: Turkey's supposed to be an Islamic country, how come
: they drink alcohol, and flirt, and some woman shows
: "up to the bikini line" What bikini? Weren´t
: bkinis invented in the 1950's? And could people
: divorce? All this has surprised me.

: Very happy to hear that you are enjoying it. Don`t
: rush
: though, I will need some time to catch up.
:
: Yes, absolutely, I will find some very nice links for
: the music.

: I am about 1/3 of the way through our August
: selection.
: The writing is very beautiful and highly descriptive
: of Istanbul. The novel reminds me in many ways of The
: Man Without Qualities.
:
: In Part II there is much discussion of traditional
: Turkish music. Lale, could you perhaps provide some
: links to samples of this music so we can get an idea
: of what it sounds like?
