Yes,in such circles people keep running into one another. My friends in Istanbul live similarly. Well educated, relatively well-off people, they keep meeting/dating/hiring somebody who is someone else's something. It seems like everyone is connected to everyone else by a six degrees of separation. When I am in Istanbul, I observe at dinner tables that when someone starts telling a story, the persons in the story turn out to be cousins of those around the table, or their friends' ex-spouses or their neighbour. It is quite a different world.

Oh, yes, The Kite Runner was the worst! It is very common in cheap opportunistic novels like that. You already know what is coming next. The rich uncle will turn out to be the poor orphan's father, or the bad guy will turn out to be the kid who was done wrong 20 years ago... It is all so predictable.
