I enjoyed the first section of 2666, too. I don't want to further influence you except to say that I would have thought it a pleasant, though not particularly memorable, novel if I had offered my opinion 100 pages in.
I am terrible at solving codes. I'm not particularly good at puzzles of any kind, but codes, forget it! :^)
So I guess your secret is safe from me, Lale.

: Glad you are loving it. No apologies necessary, but
: you'll have to hold your tongue on it for a few
: months, won't you? (The "I333" had me
: confused at first.)
:
: I'm also reading a book with a number in the title,
: 2666, which Sterling hated. So far I like it, but I'm
: only 100 pages into it. The principal characters so
: far are all professors of German literature, which is
: what I might have become if I could have gone to grad
: school as soon as I finished undergraduate, but the
: need to earn a living made for different choices (or
: no choice at all).
