Woods talks a bit about Pnin, more about Miss Jean Brodie, and still more about The Death of Ricardo Reis. He only mentions The Savage Detectives.
In his discussion of character, he says that Jean Brodie is one of the most popular characters in British fiction, and goes on to ask what we actually know about her beyond her. She say she is in her prime and that her students are the creme de la creme, and thatīs about it. She seems to be the thinnest of characters, and yet she grips people. Woods argues against Forsterīs idea of round and flat characters, saying for one thing that it prejudices novels over short stories and that some characters who recieve only a couple lines are more memorable than others that take up much more space.
