I read the Penguin translation by Robert Baldrick. Amazon is very sloppy with reviews of translated books. They are likely to combine reviews of different translations as though only the title matters. (!) I looked through the reviews under the Penguin edition, and I saw mostly complaints about the Oxford edition translated by Douglas Parmée. I do not speak French well enough to read it in the original, so I have no way of knowing which version is closest to Flaubert. The Penguin appealed to me most after standing in a bookstore and comparing the first few paragraphs across different translations. I like the novel so much in this translation that it makes my All-Time Top Ten. But of course there may be a better translation out there. I don't know any "star" French translators like Pevear and Volokhonsky from Russian or Grossman from Spanish.
