: Outside of the Arthurian, though, have you read
: Icelandic sagas? Njal's Saga is probably the best
: known. It is excellent, and it reads quite
: startlingly like a modern novel.
I haven't read any of the Norse sagas. My original reading plan included the Poetic Edda, Egil's Saga, the Prose Edda, the Nibelungenlied, the Laxdæla Saga, and Njal's Saga. However, I decided to split these off into a separate Germanic/Nordic cycle which I will undertake some time after I finish my Arthurian cycle (perhaps 2013).
Another possibility for the Arthurian list is Don Quixote's hero Amadis of Gaul, but its length is intimidating. I'll decide on it later.
