i'm reading C&P and i've run into something which puzzles me.the puzzle is this:

about midway through the book (Part 4,Chapter I).the arch-villain of the story appears unexpectedly.Svidrigailov.it seems clear that raskolnikov knows who he is and that he has appeared earlier in the book.

i cannot find that earlier appearance,nor can i find the reference S.makes to the wife he killed,Marfa Petrovna.

the book i'm using is not indexed so i've been riffling through the pages with no luck..

i'm hoping someone can enlighten me.
