Yes, it is so much easier to write SF in short story form. It is difficult to sustain the theme for too long without turning it into some over-the-top silliness. The limits of time/space in a short story conveniently allows the absence of befores, afters and beyonds of the story. Reader can fill in the gaps and the writer doesn't have to.
