Thank you for joining the search party.
I also saw many references to a famous "the Tunnel Under the World," had anyone ever heard of it before? Since it's so famous?
My tunnel had no trains or railroads, it was all cars going into a tunnel. I would tell you the story but I don't want to ruin it, in case we find it.
Good point about 1980: I was in high school only until 1977. The story would have to be published in good enough time to make it into school text books.

: I have attempted to join the search. Both Google and
: Yahoo keep leading me to "The Tunnel Under the
: World" by Frederik Pohl (1955). It appears to be
: a famous science-fiction story, anthologized in The
: Oxford Book of Science Fiction Stories ,
: Masterpieces: The Best Science Fiction of the 20th
: Century , and so on.

: I looked in an index to science fiction short stories
: and found four named "Tunnel" or "The
: Tunnel." Only one of them, however, was
: apparently written before 1980, and that is "The
: Tunnel" by Raymond Harvey, first published 1967
: and later reprinted in an anthology of "Macabre
: Railroad Stories."
:
: There is also "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert
: Heinlein, but that's a novel. I read it (and
: everything else Heinlein had written at that time)
: when I was young.
