I looked in an index to science fiction short stories and found four named "Tunnel" or "The Tunnel." Only one of them, however, was apparently written before 1980, and that is "The Tunnel" by Raymond Harvey, first published 1967 and later reprinted in an anthology of "Macabre Railroad Stories."
There is also "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert Heinlein, but that's a novel. I read it (and everything else Heinlein had written at that time) when I was young.

: So far we have:
:
: The Tunnel (1948, 160 pages)
: New English edition to be released 27 Dec 2011
: Ernesto Sabato (Argentine, 1911-2011)
:
: William H. Gass - The Tunnel
:
: And this short story The Tunnel that comes up in
: google which is still not my tunnel:
:
: The Tunnel is a short story by Friedrich Dürrenmatt,
: that came out in 1952. The story appears in the book
: "The Tunnel“ (1964). It belongs to the most
: important works of Dürrenmatt and is a classic among
: the surrealistic short stories. With the beginning of
: the story, Dürrenmatt parodies Thomas Mann. The first
: sentence is very long and nested. Furthermore,
: Dürrenmatts student is in a train and likes cigars –
: just like the young man in The Magic Mountain (Der
: Zauberberg).
:
: And there is this one:
:
: Der Tunnel is a novel by Bernhard Kellermann
: published in April 1913...
:
: Looks like it's a popular title.
:
: But my tunnel was the best tunnel. I wish I could find
: it. I am looking.
