Great nominations! (much better than mine)
: 1. Umberto Eco (Italian): "The Prague
: Cemetery"
Every time I open Amazon, I see this one under "Coming Soon for You." I think it will be released here in November. I've never even read The Name of the Rose, so I better get to it soon.
: 2. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (Turkish): "A Mind at
: Peace"
I've never heard of the author, but Lale can fill us in, I'm sure. The publisher is Archipelago, which is good. There are folks I know of who subscribe to every book they publish.
: 3. Anthony Burgess (British): "Nothing Like the
: Sun"
Harold Bloom praises this one.
: 4. Marguerite Yourcenar (French): "Opus
: Nigrum"
I don't see this title anywhere. Is it, perhaps, L'Œuvre au noir, published in English translation as The Abyss?
: 5. Benito Perez Galdos (Spanish): "Fortunata and
: Jacinta"
I've actually been reading this for the last couple of weeks, but I'm not very far along. It's quite long, so I've just been reading, at most, a couple of its very short chapters per day. It's called "Spain's War and Peace," but so far it is much more like Buddenbrooks.
: 6. Roberto Bolaño (Chilean): "The Savage
: Detectives"
We've had this nominated every year recently. I hope this is the year. I told myself I would read it this year, but I haven't gotten to it.
: 7. Martin Luis Guzman (Mexican): "The Eagle and
: the Serpent"
Back from last year!
: 8. Yasunari Kawabata (Japanese): "The Sound of
: the Mountain"
Our discussion of Snow Country was one of our best ever.
: 9. Hermann Melville (American): "Typee"
I read this years ago, but don't remember much about it.
: 10. Now for the Mexican female author:
Cleopatra Dismounts sounds really intriguing (sexy cover, too!) though, as little as we've read from Mexico, it might be more appropriate to read a novel like Leaving Tabasco or Recollections of Things to Come that tells us something about your country. All of these titles will go on my shopping list, no matter which you select.
