I finished the book last night. I'm planning to begin again tomorrow. I hope that I can concentrate better and enjoy it more. I hardly even noticed Saramago's lack of periods in The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Blindness, but I found it difficult in this book. I'm assuming my mind just wasn't all with me. If I can't get more into the book pretty quickly this time, I won't finish a second reading now.
: Still, I'm not sure what the point was of having
: Raimundo re-write the history of the siege, only to
: have the end result be the same.
If the end result isn't the same, the alternate history is obviously false. I think part of the game is to play with the notion of history as a construct. The construct must fit the facts there can be no doubt of. It must appear to be a legitimate possibility.
