Well, your comments are certainly an encouragement to read "The French Lieutenant's Woman", especially since I liked "The Magus" so much. I have finished "The History of the Siege of Lisbon" and, contrary to my expectations, it turned out I enjoyed it very much.
Now, about the mystery genre, I'm no expert, but I've read all four novels and almost all Sherlock Holmes stories. I adore them, and have read some of them several times. I've read no Hammet or Carver, and it would be great if we could include something for next year's list. I've read a couple of Agatha Christie's books: "The ABC Murders" and "Five Little Piggies". I liked them, although I think Doyle is more of a literary writer. I also read something by Belgian author Georges Simenon, featuring the detective Maigret: "The Murderer of the Canal". Good. And there is a great Mexican novel entitled "The Mongol Complot", by Rafael Bernal, which might have ben translated into English. That's what I remember now.

: I read The French Lieutenant's Woman earlier this
: year--I think we discussed it briefly at the time--and
: it became one of my all-time favorites as well.
:
: One of my reading goals for the next year or so is to
: explore the mystery genre, including Agatha Christie.
: The only works I've read of that kind are some
: Sherlock Holmes and one novel each by Raymond Chandler
: and Dashiell Hammett.
:
: My most important reading accomplishment in recent
: months has been The Recognitions by William Gaddis.
: I would say it is the most challenging novel I've read
: that wasn't written by James Joyce.
:
: I haven't been in much of a reading mood lately. The
: incredibly heat we've been having this summer is
: mentally draining--38 consecutive days over 100F and
: no end in sight. I've only been able to read the first
: few pages of The History of the Siege of Lisbon.

: I finished TFL'sW a couple weeks ago. It was the most
: interesting and entertaining book I've read in a
: while. It definitely goes onto my list of favorites.
:
: Other than that, I recently finished Les Miserables
: after a couple months. After that I read And Then
: There Were None by Agatha Christie.
:
: Now I'm reading The History of the Siege of Lisbon .
: It's much more difficult to read than the other two
: Saramago books I've read.
