Just so you know, Guillermo, I started to discuss The Magus and address your questions. But it's just been too long since I read it. I would be discussing my memories of the book, not actually the book itself. And believe me, I don't have a photographic memory! :-)
Maybe I'll read it yet again in the near future and we can discuss it then.
