The criteria for the "Board's List" are that
: it be an English-language novel first published in the
: 20th Century. One of the listed books clearly does not
: meet that test: Darkness at Noon was written in
: German, not English.
Darkness at Noon was indeed originally written in German. However, the original German manuscript was lost, and the first publication of the novel was in English translation.
Therefore, since its first publication was in English, and German versions are back-translations from the English, it can arguably be considered an English language novel.
An interesting, and probably unique, case.
