FYI - I don't think that Roth actually is right-wing. In fact, I think he is a well established liberal. He just seemed unfairly hostile to Sixties protesters and radicals, which is a sore point for me because I sort of still am one. :-)
I don't know you in person, Lale, so I'll have to take you at your word that you are overwhelming. That's not how you come across in your postings, in my opinion. Incidentally, I was always the smart aleck who answered questions if no one else would. I hated to be a know-it-all, and I would wait to see if someone else would answer, but if not... So, I understand the French class perfectly. It was that way even in psychology grad school, where you'd think the room would be chock full of over-achievers!

: for fear of monopolizing the

: I do this in real life. None of you here have met me
: in person, so you may not understand but I feel I am
: too much for any given room of people, so I restrain
: myself from attending all the parties and events and
: functions I am invited to. I try to give people a
: break from myself. Also, it is very exhausting to fill
: a room, so I like taking a break myself.
:
: In France when I was taking French classes, I
: deliberately skipped two classes every week (out of 5
: classes) to give other students a chance to answer the
: teacher's questions. It is not that I talk too much, I
: don't. But when someone asks a question an no one
: makes an attempt to give an answer, I take it upon
: myself. And in language classes most adults are either
: shy or have poor language learning skills. That leaves
: me to interact with the teacher.
:
: If Sterling had asked if we thought Roth was
: right-wing, I would have most definitely answered and
: said that I had not read enough of his works to decide
: one way or the other, but that I had a tendency to
: believe people if they declare someone right-wing and
: that from now on I would have a less favourable
: opinion of Roth than the one I had after having read
: only one of his books which I had not liked.
