: I read Portnoy's Complaint . It was my first Roth
: novel, and I enjoyed it very much. It surely is, as it
: says on the back cover, one of the two or three
: funniest works in American fiction. I plan to read at
: least Sabbath's Theater sometime.
I read Portnoy's Complaint when it first came out in 1969. It was quite shocking at that time--more than anything could be these days I suppose.
A couple of years ago I read The Human Stain and Sabbath's Theater. I enjoyed both, but preferred The Human Stain slightly. American Pastoral is said to be Roth's best recent novel. It's on my (ever changing) reading list for this year.
