I guess I learned that when I was following the Bible blogger on Slate, but it didn't really stick with me. He didn't talk about any reasons for it or effects of it.

Yeah, there's a lot I wish I knew more about. And it's not always easy to learn things on your own. I often wish I could ask someone questions.
Religion is definately one of the things I'd like to have better knowledge of. I'd like to have a good understanding of what the Bible says, what the Koran says. I'd like to know more about some other religions too. I'm interested in a couple books I learned about recently: God is Not One: the Eight Rival Religions that Run the World - and Why Their Differences Matter and Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know - and Doesn't, both by Stephen Prothero.
I want to know more about science, so that my acceptance of some scientific theories is not just based on faith as somebody else's religion might be. I'd like to know and understand some things so that I could explain them to people in such a way that only their obstinancy could keep them from accepting whatever.
I'd like to understand more about American politics, but it's very difficult to talk to people about that. They start raving. I want somebody who can tell me what each side says and how the other responds. Of course, I know a little of that.
