I finally read Little, Big. I was disappointed. I just couldn't get in tune with it. In fact, I actually started it back in February, read a couple hundred pages, and gave it up. I got through it in May, and I enjoyed it more than I had been before, but I still wasn't crazy about it.
After that, I read The Waves by Virginia Woolf. I had to restart this one too. I didn't take any time off, just went back to the beginning after about forty pages. Once I'd adjusted my expectations or attention, I enjoyed it well enough.
I reread Ripening Seed as I had planned to do this year. I enjoyed it the first time I read it, but this time, I found it somewhat tiresome.
The last novel I finished was Truce by Mario Benedetti. I enjoyed it very well. I read this as part of my ongoing interest in reading books set in or around Buenos Aires. Benedetti was Uruguayan and the book is set in Montevideo. There is a nice Argentine movie, El Lado Oscuro del Corazon, that uses some of Benedetti's poetry.
Right now I'm reading a book called Understanding the Bible. I am also reading the Bible as I have been all year. I would like to have a reasonable understanding of what the Bible says, but I don't enjoy reading it at all. I usually feel that I can't say anything about the page I've just read. I have some block or something. I read the Koran a few months ago. I liked it better.
