Joffre, since you seem to like Gide a bit you might want to try to find a copy of his journals. He kept a journal throughout most of his adult life--the published edition fills four large volumes, though there also is a two volume selection--and much of what he writes is fascinating. He goes into detail on his travels, his readings, his writing process, and his literary friends, including Proust, whose "Swann's Way" he famously rejected when he was an editor/publisher.

: I guess S&S lacks the depth of Austen's big four, but
: it's not something I can really percieve. I too like
: it better than Persuasion . As I said when we read
: it, I had trouble enjoying Persuasion , didn't really
: enjoy it until that reading, which was my fourth. To
: people who have never read Austen, I recommend P&P or
: S&S because I feel they're the most enjoyable.
:
: I really like The Counterfeiters . I didn't like The
: Immoralist nearly so much. But I've read The C a
: couple times, and the last time was just a couple
: years ago. I've only read The I once, maybe as much
: as twelve years ago. I may have just killed any votes
: for it, but I don't mind that.
:
: I plan to read Gide's Vatican Cellars soon. I didn't
: nominate it, because it's out of print. There are
: plenty of used copies of which I've already ordered
: one. (Thanks, Sterling, for setting me straight last
: year about the ordering of used books.) VC is supposed
: to be a Dostoevskian novel about a random murder.
:
: You probably know that Cheri is the most recommended
: of Colette's novels. I like it too, but again, it's
: been longer since I read RS.
