: The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins - I've
: intended to read this for years, and Joffre's recent
: endorsement rekindled my interest.
I enjoyed it very much too. The characters are wonderful and even though it is a large novel, the plot is tight and intense.
: The Human Stain by Philip Roth - Roth is clearly one
: of the most highly regarded living American authors.
: To me, this sounds like one of his more interesting
: novels.
I read this a few months ago for the Yale course on the American novel. It was the best of the three Roth novels I've read.
: Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson - A novel that
: was not even reviewed by the New York Times when first
: released, it has grown in stature through the years.
Another book in the Yale course and one of the best. She uses beautiful language and deep imagery without sending the reader to the dictionary every couple of pages like McCarthy or Banville. I considered nominating one of her subsequent novels, Giliad or Home.
: Money by Martin Amis
: The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald
Both of these were books that thought about nominating.
