Anybody here read this? As I've mentioned, I've had my copy twelve years without reading it. It takes some resolve to start these extremely long books, and somehow, while I found the resolve for other books, I could never find it for this one. I might also have been frightened off by quoted passages which illustrated some point or other but did not seem very amusing. Now that I've begun it, though, I'm enjoying the book quite well, and I'm getting through it pretty quickly. It is full of ideas, but it is somehow very easy reading. I surely don't understand all the ideas, but the sentences don't trip me up. And perhaps my concentration is just better at the moment for some reason. I hope that lasts.
I find myself rather attracted to Diotima's maid Rachel. I especially like one thing that is said of her: "when she was reading a novel Diotima had recommended as a great work of art (these were her favorites) she understood what was happening in it only as one percieves a lively event from a distance, or in a strange country..."
