Are you sure about this? Is there a note in your edition? I interpretted this differently. I didn't know anything about NRF. The most famous yellow book in fiction is surely the one from The Picture of Dorian Gray. I imagine you know that book is presumed to be Huysman's A rebours. I do not think Strether was necessarily carrying A rebours, but from wikipedia, "such books in Paris were wrapped in yellow paper to alert the reader to their lascivious content." Just a bit later, there was a quarterly review called The Yellow Book. It was associated with aestheticism. Aubrey Beardsley was it's first art editor.
