The original list of 77 books has been whittled to 6. One of these will be named the Best National Book Award winner of the last 60 years. 4 books are rooted in the American South, and 4 books are short story collections:
1. Collected Stories--William Faulkner
2. Collected Stories--Eudora Welty
3. Collected Stories--John Cheever
4. Collected Stories--Flannery O'Connor
5. "Gravity's Rainbow"--Thomas Pynchon
6. "Invisible Man"--Ralph Ellison
I haven't read the Pynchon book, so I can't judge that one. Of the ones I have read at least some of, I'd say Faulkner, Ellison, and O'Connor are most deserving. I wonder, though, if Faulkner's chances will be hurt in any way by his novels overshadowing his talents as a short story writer.

I am still deciding between Ellison and O'Connor.
