I don't want to derail the discussion of TVOW into a biblical discussion, but fathers loving their children (especially sons) is found throughout the Old Testament. Think of the story of Abraham and Isaac, with the implied horror of God's request for the sacrifice of a son, or of David's intense grief over the death of Absalom. As for the New Testament, well, let's kill the fatted calf at the return of the Prodigal Son. I don't believe that the ancient Hebrews did not love their sons (or Son, as the case may be).
