I am continuing to enjoy the free Yale course on The American Novel Since 1945. There is one lecture that I recommend to all of you, even if you aren't doing the readings. Ostensibly it is the second lecture on Philip Roth's novel The Human Stain, but actually it is about censorship. The professor briefly touches on the legal challenges to such books as Ulysses and Howl, but devotes most of the time to the more subtle form of censorship that determines which books you see when you walk into a Barnes & Noble, which books never make it into print, and who has the power to make that decision.
