Pickwick is in my list for re-reading soon. I first had notice of it many years ago, when I read the "Little Women" series. Jo and her sisters, as well as Laurie the neighbor, used to play Pickwick Club. I read it in a fine Spanish translation when I was 11 or 12, and I simply loved it. It's there in my book shelf and I will read it again soon. Please let us know what you think of it after you're finished.

: I enjoyed both Crying of Lot 49 and Gravity's Rainbow.
: I'm still undecided on re-reading the former for the
: Yale course. Sterling, I had the same opinion of Glass
: Bead Game, and can't improve upon your description. I
: did finish it, but I don't care to read it again.
:
: I haven't done much reading in the last few weeks due
: to travel and caring for grandchildren. I've been
: carrying around Dickens' Pickwick Papers for almost a
: month, but should finally finish it tonight. By
: coincidence, in Lucerne, Switzerland, I ran across the
: Pickwick Hotel and Pub.

: I'm glad you've enjoyed TCoL49 , joffre. You might
: find that you enjoy other works of Pynchon rather than
: GR . Against the Day , for instance, is damnably
: long, but very funny and entertaining.
:
: Good luck with your The Scarlet Letter monograph.
: I look forward to reading it and engaging in a
: spirited discussion.
:
: I have been attempting to read The Glass Bead Game .
: I read the three short stories, skimmed the poems, and
: waded through about 150 pages of the novel. I am not
: enjoying it. I find it dull, predictable, and trite.
: While I gather that some humor is intended by the dry
: and pompous style, I am not amused. Many years ago, I
: read Siddhartha and Steppenwolf . I was not
: impressed by them at the time. I don't think Hesse is
: for me. Life is too short to waste time reading works
: that do not engage one on any level.
:
: On the other hand, I absolutely loved The Sea . I
: look forward to our discussion. Talking with my
: friends here, I've found that not everyone shares my
: high opinion of the work.
