I'm glad you've enjoyed TCoL49, joffre. You might find that you enjoy other works of Pynchon rather than GR. Against the Day, for instance, is damnably long, but very funny and entertaining.

I have been attempting to read The Glass Bead Game. I read the three short stories, skimmed the poems, and waded through about 150 pages of the novel. I am not enjoying it. I find it dull, predictable, and trite. While I gather that some humor is intended by the dry and pompous style, I am not amused. Many years ago, I read Siddhartha and Steppenwolf. I was not impressed by them at the time. I don't think Hesse is for me. Life is too short to waste time reading works that do not engage one on any level.
On the other hand, I absolutely loved The Sea. I look forward to our discussion. Talking with my friends here, I've found that not everyone shares my high opinion of the work.
