I finally got around to rereading TCoL49. I'm glad I reread it. Gravity's Rainbow was poisoning my memory of TCoL49 which I like well enough. It's often funny, and it's interesting. I'll read again sometime, try to get to know it better. Understanding Thomas Pynchon wasn't worth much. I've used other books from that series and really didn't expect much. A Companion to TCoL49 by J. Kerry Grant seems worth having. There's a lot of interesting information. The significance of the name Oedipa is discussed. Some critics see Oedipa as in some way oedipal. One says that Oedipa Maas might be read as Oedipa My Ass. There's a long note on the concept of entropy. Sometimes, I think interpretation goes too far.
I reread The Scarlet Letter, fouth time, and I'll probably read it again very soon. I would like to write some sort of informal lecture on it, something to help you poor people who dislike it.
Right now, I'm reading Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon. I know some of you read it a few years ago. Did anyone ever make it to Ilheus? I'm enjoying the book. I've come to the part where Nacib has just married Gabriela. It seems sad to try to civilize her. I have mixed feeling about her. She is not the kind of girl I would like, but she has a certain charm. She is like a deer or something. Someone should have told Nacib not to marry a deer. I've been drinking caipirinhas while reading it.
