Middle-spring was awkward in Mexico, especially Mexico City, Memsahiba Lale. For two weeks the busy and noisy city was paralyzed. I live very much downtown, in a nice area called Polanco. It's full of office buildings, restaurants, fancy stores, and therefore, of people driving and walking around. But the influenza crisis forced the government to shut down practically all activity. Many people lost a lot of money, and it was awful to go out and see, in the middle of a Friday, when everybody is out for lunch and drinks, the city deserted. It was like one of those B-movies of Hollywood, like some apocalyptic disaster was coming our way or extraterrestrial monsters were about to descend. So my wife and I, as well as another couple, accepted an invitation by some friends to go to a small provincial town called Sayula, in the Western province of Jalisco. There, life was normal. They have a very pretty house and we spent beautiful days in the sunny place, chatting in the pool or preparing delicious meals. Mexico is back to normal, and one of the good consequences of it all is that I have had time to really advance with "A Suitable Boy". I have 200 pages left, and hope to finish before my 40th birthday (Sunday May 31st). I am really looking forward to discussing this book. When I saw the size, I hoped I wouldn't like it (especially after the experiencie with the one by Kiran Desai). But I simply loved it. It's one of the best contemporary pieces of fiction I have read. I will comment extensively on it and I hope someone will make comments too.
