I didn't know what to make of this either. My sense is that they are interpretting certain activities of people like Da Vinci and Kabbalists as having been something like what Hesse might have meant by the Glass Bead Game. I suspect that if there are actually people trying to practice a GBG that their number is comparable to the number of people who speak Klingon.
