I just read the introduction by David Coward. (As you all know, I always leave the introduction the very end.) I found Coward's introduction much more interesting than the book itself. Of course, the most important sentence in it, is this:
"The tulip was furst introduced into Holland in 1571 from Turkey."
In the notes at the back, the word "tulip" is explained: "The name derives from the Persian dulban, and refers to the turban to which the shape of the flower was compared."
Indeed, this is the explaination offered in many articles I have read on the history of tulips. Back then, the headdress in Ottoman Empire really did look like a tulip.
