Another obscure work on Burt's list is the Cities of Salt novel sequence by Abd al-Rahman Munif. I don't believe I've seen it mentioned elsewhere. Burt says it consists of five novels (Cities of Salt, The Trench, Variations on Night and Day, The Uprooted, and The Desert of Darkness). Amazon has listings of only the first three and calls them a trilogy. The final two volumes evidently haven't been translated into English. (Which makes you wonder if Prof. Burt himself has read all the books on his list.)
