I finished The Black Tulip this morning. I enjoyed it very much. Perhaps it's a rather light classic, but that's just what we needed after Jealousy and The Planetarium. I'm probably more likely to get around to The Three Musketeers for having read and enjoyed this.
My edition is from Waking Lion Press. It doesn't even say who the translator was. I just bought it because I liked the cover. I had no problems with it.
Actually, Dumas was not really a one-man-fiction-factory. He worked with collaborators, usually Auguste Maquet. Maquet did work on The Three Musketeers, Queen Margot, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Black Tulip, and others. I don't know of any other instance of this, though it is sometimes theorized that some author's wife, girlfriend, sister, etc., contributed to his work. That brings up some interesting questions. How much does one need to contribute to get some credit?
I like tulips and many other flowers. Our winter is also too warm. My sister used to buy new tulips every spring. I think some people dig up the bulbs and keep them in the freezer over the winter. I wish I had a fortune that would allow me to dedicate myself to something like growing my own tulips. I suppose most of us do.
The picture of the castle is nice. I hadn't thought of searching for such pictures. Too bad you can't find the Frisian costume.
I had to retype this stinking post. I forgot my name the first time. I've done that before. They changed it so I don't automatically lose my post when I do, but this time I messed something else up and hit the backspace key too many times.
By the way, the new system of rotating the active threads to the top seems to be working quite well.
