Some of these things could be playful references to other works. The eraser in Jealousy is (obviously) a reference to his first novel, The Erasers. So is the white globe at the bottom of a staircase in In the Labyrinth.
I was looking for a detail in In the Labyrinth that referenced Jealousy, but didn't find anything. No banana trees! I thought at one point he was going to say that the crack on the ceiling resembled a centipede, but no.
