Like Guillermo, I usually read only one novel at a time, and I sometimes read nonfiction at the same time. I do sometimes read a second novel at the same time, when I want to read it in short sittings, so I can give it my full attention.
Right now, I'm rereading Balzac's Lost Illusions. Within Balzac's human comedy, Pere Goriot, Lost Illusions, and A Harlot Hight and Low can be thought of as a loose trilogy of the character Vautrin. I happened to read Pere Goriot last summer. I'll probably read A Harlot High and Low sometime later this year. I hate that tranlation of the title Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtizanes.
The last thing I finished was The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Kundera, another reread. I guess the last thing I read before Jealousy was Dead Souls. I've also recently read An Unsuitable Attachment by Barbara Pym and Aura by Carlos Fuentes.
Next up, I think, is Herzog, then maybe the last story from Interpreter of Maladies which I've been reading since Christmas. I don't normally read short stories, but it's not everyday you can read serious literature because the author is smokin'.
I'm probably going to reread Gargantua and Pantagruel and Jane Austen's Emma in the coming months. I don't know what else.
